Leonard Baskin: The Great American Artist + Contributor to the FDR Memorial. On Thursday, October 6, 2002, at 6 p.m. EST, the FDR Committee hosted a conversation with Richard Michelson, founder of R. Michelson Galleries. Baskin was Michelson’s mentor, collaborator, and close friend. a conversation with Richard Michelson, founder of R. The acclaimed Leonard Baskin (August 15, 1922 – June 3, 2000) created the centerpiece of Room Four at the FDR Memorial--the heart-rending 30-foot-long bas-relief in bronze entitled The Funeral Cortege that represents the nation in mourning.
