We invite your participation in a virtual stakeholder/community meeting for educators and disability leaders. This year, the FDR Memorial Legacy Committee (FDR Committee), the friends group for the FDR Memorial in Washington, DC, is launching an educational program in partnership with the University of the District of Columbia which will include writing lesson plans, leading a teacher professional development session and piloting the lesson plans in classrooms. We would like to invite you to join us at one of our virtual stakeholder/community member sessions being held on May 4 and May 5 from 4:00-5:00pm EST. You are invited to choose to attend either one.
We are looking for teachers of all grade levels nationwide, especially those who work in inclusive classroom settings and or self-contained classrooms and who teach social studies, history or English. In addition, we are eager to include disability advocates and leaders from across the country who are interested in embedding disability curriculum into schools.
In the meeting we will present an overview of the educational plan and we will ask for your feedback and ideas and hopefully ongoing dialogue. Should you choose, you may remain anonymous in your participation. Your comments will directly help in the development of an educational program that will be used at the FDR Memorial and virtually in classrooms across the country.
The educational content and teacher professional development will focus on the little-known fight for disability representation at the FDR Memorial. When the Memorial was opened in 1997, there was no depiction of FDR’s disability. It took years of campaigning, protests and fundraising for the disability community to prevail and have a statue of President Roosevelt added to his president memorial in DC showing the world as he was – a person with disability who used a wheelchair every day. In addition, we will also explore the impact of disability on FDR’s leadership and other narratives that are critical in the FDR and Eleanor story.
We hope that you will consider joining us for one of the sessions. If you know someone that you think may be interested, please share this information. You may register for May 4th session at 4pm EDT at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_KqW49HviRsC61dpweXlsSg
