Leonard Baskin: The Great American Artist + Contributor to the FDR Memorial. On Thursday, October 6, 2002, at 6 p.m. EST, the FDR Committee hosted a conversation with Richard Michelson, founder of R. Michelson Galleries.  Baskin was Michelson’s mentor, collaborator, and close friend. a conversation with Richard Michelson, founder of R. Michelson Galleries, with opening remarks by Thaisa Way, Director of Garden and Landscape Studies, Dumbarton Oaks. 

The acclaimed Leonard Baskin (August 15, 1922 – June 3, 2000) created the centerpiece of Room Four at the FDR Memorial--the heart-rending 30-foot-long bas-relief in bronze entitled The Funeral Cortege that represents the nation in mourning.

Baskin was Michelson’s mentor, collaborator, and close friend. Join us at 6:00 p.m. via Zoom for this up-close and personal view of Baskin’s impact on the Memorial and American memory from someone who lived it.
