FDR Memorial Legacy Committee Wins Award in Best Shorts Film Competition

(Washington, DC, July 31, 2024) — The FDR Memorial Legacy Committee (FDR Committee) has won a prestigious Best of Short designation from The Best Shorts Film Competition. The award was given for FDR’s compelling series, “FDR: Great Abilities,” that sheds light on how Americans with disabilities successfully advocated for the inclusion of a wheelchair statue at the FDR Memorial in Washington, DC, demonstrating to the world what true leadership looks like.

“FDR: Great Abilities” meticulously outlines the determined fight led by disabled advocates and their allies to secure disability rights and representation. The series serves as an educational tool designed specifically for middle and high school students, fostering understanding of the significance of the FDR Memorial's transformation, and the significance of the historic struggle for inclusivity. The documentary stands as a testament to the power of advocacy and the enduring impact of inclusive representation. It not only educates the youth about a pivotal moment in history, but also encourages future generations to continue the fight for equality and accessibility.

"We are honored to receive this award and grateful for the support from our funding partners," said Mary E Dolan, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the FDR Memorial Legacy Committee. "This recognition underscores the importance of telling these critical stories and ensuring that the contributions and struggles of disabled individuals are acknowledged and celebrated."
